“Embracing the Gift of Delight“

Rev. Kurt Hohmann

Story: The Circle of Joy

  • One day, a farmer knocked on the door of a monastery.
    • He carried a magnificent bunch of grapes.
    • He offered them to the monk who answered the gate.
      • “These are the finest my vineyard has produced.”
  • The monk assumed the grapes should go to the Abbot.
    • The farmer replied:
      • “No. I brought them for you.”
      • “When my crops failed, you shared bread and wine with me.”
  • The monk admired the grapes.
    • Then decided the Abbot would appreciate them even more.
  • The Abbot received the grapes with delight.
    • He thought of the sick monk.
      • “Perhaps these will bring him joy.”
  • The sick monk thought of the cook.
    • The cook had cared for him faithfully.
  • The cook thought of the teacher.
    • Surely no one would appreciate such beauty more.
  • The teacher passed the grapes to the youngest novice.
    • To remind him that the universe reveals itself in the smallest details of creation.
  • The novice remembered the first person who welcomed him.
    • The monk at the gate.
  • He returned the grapes to that very monk.
    • “Eat and enjoy them.”
    • “You spend much of your time here alone.”
    • “These grapes will make you happy.”
  • The monk realized:
    • The gift had always been meant for him.
    • He savored every grape.
  • The circle was complete.
    • A circle of joy.
    • A circle of delight.
    • Always shining around generous people.

Importance of Delight

  • Delight is a sacred emotion.
    • It bubbles up from within us.
    • Fills us with joy and contentment.
    • Reminds us that life is meant to be enjoyed.
    • Calls us to seek what brings true happiness.
  • Delight ignites our spirits.
    • Brings warmth to our souls.
    • Like a gentle breeze whispering in our ears.
    • Reminds us to embrace the beauty and goodness surrounding us.
  • Delight is not dependent upon:
    • External circumstances.
    • Material possessions.
  • It is:
    • An inner state of being.
    • Accessible to anyone who opens themselves to it.

Wunjo Rune

  • Delight is a universal concept.
  • Many spiritual traditions recognize delight.
  • In Heathenry:
    • Runes are letters.
    • They are also symbols representing significant concepts and forms of energy.
  • Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem (7th century CE)

“Who uses it knows no pain,
    sorrow nor anxiety,
    and he himself has
    prosperity and bliss,
    and also enough shelter.”

  • Wunjo represents:
    • Joy.
    • Harmony.
    • The boundless delight flowing through our lives.
    • A lasting state of being rather than a fleeting emotion.
    • A profound way of experiencing the world.

Delight in the Everyday

  • When we cultivate delight, we cultivate gratitude.
    • Finding joy in simple moments:
      • The chirping of birds.
      • The warmth of the sun.
      • The taste of ripe fruit.
      • The embrace of a loved one.
      • Walking through a forest.
      • Sitting quietly in meditation.
  • Delight awakens wonder and awe.
    • Invites us to marvel at:
      • The grandeur of the cosmos.
      • The vastness of the night sky.
      • The intricate patterns of life.
      • The delicate petals of a flower.
    • Beckons us to:
      • Engage with the world.
      • Expand our understanding.
  • Wunjo encourages us:
    • To delight in the present moment.
    • To cherish the blessings around us.
    • To cultivate gratitude for the experiences that shape our lives.

Delight in Interconnection

  • Pagan perspective

    • Delight teaches us:
      • To be present.
      • To savor life’s richness.
      • To express gratitude for the interconnected web of existence that sustains us.

    • To approach others with open hearts and open minds.
    • To engage in conversations that challenge our assumptions.
    • To learn from one another.
    • To celebrate the richness of our shared humanity.
  • Wunjo reminds us:
    • Everything is interconnected.
    • Like each stroke of the rune intertwines with the next…
    • We are woven into the grand design of existence.
    • Recognizing this interconnectedness allows us to:
      • Delight in shared experiences.
      • Celebrate our common humanity.
      • Extend love and compassion to all.
